We will drive together to Cobá, where we will learn about the ruins on a guided tour and explore the mystical Mayan ruins and it’s temples. Cobá was once the most important and largest city in Yucatán. The original name was Cob Ha, which means "wind-driven, muddy water". Cobá is the largest and oldest Mayan ruined city in Yucatán with an estimation of 6,500 buildings and more than 50,000 inhabitants in the period of 200 BC. The built-up area is said to have extended to over 70 km2. Trade between the Caribbean coast and the cities inland ran through the Cobá junction. A series of stone and cobbled streets radiate from Central Square to various Mayan cities near and far. These streets are called Sacbe (white paths). Some of these sacbes lead to the Caribbean coast in the east, the longest leads straight for 100 km west to the Mayan city of Yaxuna and connects Cobá from there to Chichen Itza. Be awed by how advanced these people have lived thousands of years ago.
After the tour we will cycle through the jungle to the pyramid Nohoch Mul (in Maya: "big hill"). In the shade of the tree tops and surrounded by sounds from the endless green of the jungle, you will be delighted by sighting exotic birds. If you are daring, you can climb the second highest pyramid of the Yucatán Península (42 m high and 120 steps to the top) and be rewarded with a breath-taking view over the jungle.
Our journey will take us to the Spider Monkey Reserve in Punta Laguna where we can experience a traditional Mayan ceremony with a shaman in the jungle. After we have completed this solemn part of the tour, we will watch out for spiders and Howler monkeys on a walk through the jungle. Experience the monkeys in their natural habitat. Afterwards, we will ride the kayaks across the lagoon into the other side. Once there, the path will lead us through the jungle a bit further up to a platform. If you want, you can get an adrenaline rush over the water while zip-lining. It goes back 250 meters to the other side!
After so much culture and action we will drive to cool down in a nearby cenote for swimming. The subsoil of Yucatán is largely made of limestone, which tends to cave. These cenotes are filled with fresh water and the water is wonderfully refreshing. A staircase leads us to the inside of the cenote and to the water surface. The water is crystal clear and over 20mts deep. Exactly what you will need after an eventful day among ruins, temples, and pyramids. We will then enjoy a typical Mayan-style buffet lunch in a typical palapa restaurant overlooking the lagoon.
On the way back to Playa del Carmen we will stop in a small village and have the opportunity to buy handcrafted souvenirs (hammocks, bowls, dream catchers , blankets, masks, etc.). The prices here are definitely cheaper than in the famous 5th Avenida and you can haggle prices.
